Echo was built with a simple premise: your thoughts should be yours alone. Most journaling apps are designed to capture attention or extract insight for advertising. Echo is built to give you a quiet, private space to reflect. You can use Echo entirely offline, and your entries remain fully private.
What Data We Collect and How We Collect It
Echo collects only the information necessary to provide the journaling experience. We collect the journal entries and text you manually input into the app. We do not track your behavior, collect device identifiers, or use background analytics to monitor how you use the app.
How We Use Your Data
Your data is used strictly to provide the core functions of the Echo app:
- To safely store your personal journal entries on your device.
- To generate optional, personalized weekly reflections (only if explicitly enabled).
Local Encryption
By default, your journal entries are encrypted on your device using industry-standard encryption. Each entry is transformed into unreadable data before it is stored or synced via your personal iCloud.
No Data Selling
We do not sell, share, or monetize your journal entries. There are no advertisers, data brokers, or third-party marketing networks involved in Echo. Your writing is yours.
Third-Party AI and Data Sharing (AI Reflections)
Echo offers an optional premium feature called "AI Reflections." To use this feature, you must provide explicit, in-app consent before any data is processed.
If you explicitly consent and enable this feature, here is exactly how your data is handled:
- What data is sent: Only the specific journal entries required to generate your weekly insights. We do not send personally identifiable account information (like your name or email).
- Who the data is sent to: Your entries are securely transmitted via API to our third-party AI provider, OpenAI.
- Equal Protection Guarantee: We ensure that OpenAI provides the same or equal protection as Echo's internal privacy standards. Under our strict enterprise agreement with OpenAI, your personal journal entries are never used to train OpenAI’s global, public, or internal AI models.
- Data Retention: Data sent to OpenAI is securely retained for a maximum of 30 days strictly for automated security and abuse monitoring, after which it is permanently and automatically deleted from their servers.
Your Rights and Data Deletion
You have complete control over your data. You can delete individual journal entries, disable AI reflections, or delete your entire account and all associated data directly within the app's settings at any time.
